1) Sample Grinding in Messer Cold Grinding Lab
CENTRE OF EXPERTISE – COLD GRINDING & RECYCLING
Messer operates a highly-specialised technical centre for cold grinding in Willich, Germany. Due to the extreme cold temperatures of liquid nitrogen thermoplastics and elastomers become brittle. Very fine particle sizes can be achieved and in addition process volumes increased. When it comes to spices a loss of aroma or flavour can be prevented. Fine grinding of synthetic materials or natural products is an art which the Messer Group has mastered.
2) Cold Grinding Equipment for Product and Mill Cooling
PADDLE SCREW COOLER
In the paddle screw cooler, granules or powders are cooled down to -196°C by liquid nitrogen. This cooler type is normally used for cold grinding processes. Here, tough, elastic or temperature sensitive materials such as thermoplastics, elastomers, spices, pharmaceutical products or waxes can be cooled. Coolers are available with capacities from about 50 to 3,000 kg per hour.
CRYOGENIC CONTROL VALVE UNIT FOR LIQUID NITROGEN
In a cryogenic control valve unit, the dosage of liquid nitrogen is regulated in accordance with a 4-20 mA signal. A control valve is mounted on a stainless steel frame, together with safety valves, manometers, a dirt trap and an evaporator coil for captive medium supply. If required, it can also be supplied with a solenoid or membrane valve as an open/close valve. The unit is also available in a stainless steel cabinet with a viewing window.
PID controllers are required for the control of a cold grinding plant. They supply the output signal needed for the control valve unit. The regulators are preset for direct use.
3) Liquid Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide as a Cooling Agent for Cold Grinding
Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air and has the property of displacing oxygen. Nitrogen is therefore used, in particular, for applications in which oxygen is not wanted. In cryogenic liquid form, nitrogen is a powerful refrigerant. Typical areas of application are the protection of production processes, e.g. for printed circuit boards, the cooling and frosting of foodstuffs, the inertisation of pipelines or tanks and cryogenic applications in industry.
For industrial applications, high-purity carbon dioxide is normally used, produced as a by-product in the chemicals industry or recovered from underground sources. It can be used as a liquid, as a gas or in solid form as dry ice. Carbon dioxide plays an important role in the cooling and frosting of foodstuffs and in the treatment of water. In drinks it provides a refreshing sparkle, and carbon dioxide is also needed for innovative processes like dry ice blasting.
